It was one of those perfect San Francisco days- crystal clear blue skies, bright liquid sunshine and just a tiny prickle of Fall chill in the air. We stopped into Spuntino di Ottimista, and amazing little cheese and panini shop on Union Street- I took one look at the wine selection on lining the walls of the shop and felt right at home.
Morellino, Chianti, Brunello, Oh My!
Gragnano, Sparkling Muller Thurgau and an amazing Prosecco
When you consider Italy has 20 regions, each of which contains hundreds of indigenous varietals, Spuntino has a relatively concise collection of Italian wines available. However, compared to most Italian wine selections this place is a real celebration of Italy. I love that they are selling Gragnano, a sparkling red wine from Campanian that could create world peace if everyone would drink it. In one of the most inspired moments of wine writing ever, Tracie P describes this as the “wine for all things warm and gooey”. Which is also why I souldn’t have been surprised to find Gragnano here… check out some of these cheeses!
Yep. La Eur or Robiola– both of which have a special cheesy creaminess that makes me want to swoon. Especially in conjunction with the idea of that sparkly Gragnano hitting my palate.
Spuntino’s mascot, Millie, Greets Customers on Union Street
Spuntino is a friendly, neighborhood place with a very serious wine selection. Check it out for yourself and enjoy a little nibble or sip, straight from Italy to San Francisco.
